Linnea breaks her leg.

February 1, 2008

Linnea will be having surgery today around 12 noon Mountain Time - Please be praying for her.Linnea fell from scaffolding while working on our house yesterday. She landed with all her weight on her left foot with pressure on her left leg pretty severely injuring the tibial plateau part of her leg/knee (multiple fractures and pieces) in the process. There is additional damage to knee cartilage. Today (Friday, Feb.1) around noon mountain time Dr. Dwyer, at the Montrose Hospital in Colorado, is scheduled to do surgery to repair the damage done (screws, plates, etc.).

We would appreciate your prayers for:

*  Linnea’s safety during surgery.
*  Dr. Dwyer and the surgical team.
*  Linnea’s ability to handle pain meds and recovery.
*  We are praying for the Holy Spirit to guide and direct in the surgery and for God to touch Linnea during recovery.

Please join us.

Hospital Bills:
We have catastrophic health insurance but the deductible is around $5500 along with other co pays we are looking at a significant bill. If you would like to help us with those expenses, we would very much appreciate it.

February 2, 2008  4 1/2 hours of Surgery
First of all; Thank You to all of you who prayed for Linnea’s surgery, stopped by the hospital, sent flowers, called and sent emails yesterday.Dr. Dwyer felt that things went “well”. I mentioned to him that a lot of people were praying…he was glad to hear that. He said there were a lot of pieces to put back together. I have seen the pictures of her leg/knee and there are a lot of screws and hardware in there. I will post a picture if I can get copy. Now it is about recovery. The next 12 weeks will be about pain management, rehab - keeping her range of motion and PATIENCE. I have a feeling there is going to be a lot to learn about patience around the Hackett house. Neither Linnea or I are good at not keeping moving…Help us Jesus. Please Pray…
* That Linnea’s transition from “drip” pain management to pills goes well.
* For the healing process to be complete and without complications in the future.
* For a lot of grace, love and patience around the Hackett house.

Check out the hardware. linnea-leg-on-the-motion-machine.jpg Linnea wouldn’t let me take her picture unless I just showed her leg.Thank you for praying. Linnea is off the drip pain control and on to pills. She is up and taking short walks using her good leg and a walker. We are hoping she will be able to come home tomorrow.
2/14/08   Linnea is on the road to recovery…Ridgway, Colorado has to be the best place in the world to have something like this happen.

Thank you for praying for Linnea. The cards, flowers and calls mean a lot to us. She is making progress with a long road ahead. God is answering specific prayers.  This week the 44 staples holding her surgical wound(s) were taken out (Photo below). There is blood in her calf area that causes her pain but all in all she is doing great. Her world is pretty small consisting of the couch, bed and toilet. Nights seem to be the hardest.

The Ridgway people (church and community) have been amazing. The food, friendship, visits, prayers and good old community life of Ridgway has really been a blessing. Everywhere I go people ask about Linnea, send candy and flowers, and communicate their love and concern. If this kind of thing is going to happen this is the best possible place to have it happen.

Prayer Requests:
For the blood in her calf area to disapate.
For complete healing and range of motion of her angle and knee as she works on physical therapy.
For the finances needed to pay our medical deductible.

Medical Deductible: ($5,500)
Thank you Justin and Bonnie Stark for the $490 donation towards our medical fund! If anyone else would like to help with this need you can donate online through Egiving (link) or by sending a check (both are tax deductible donations) to the Goodyear address of Alternative Missions.  Thank You!

4/11/08 Permission to start putting weight on her leg.

linnea-leg-41108-web.jpg linnea-leg-41108-web2b.jpg

Since Linnea’s last doctor appontment a few days ago she has been given the go ahead to put 25% of her weight on her leg for the next couple of weeks and then she will have another doctors appointment to check on her progress.

Please continue to pray for her recovery/healing.  We are still about $1000 short of meeting our medical deductible if you feel led to help with that.

5/30/08  Update:

Linnea had an appointment with Dr. Dwyer yesterday and he mentioned that she is making good progress. She can now put her full weight on her leg and she is walking better and stronger each day.

We want to thank all of you who have been praying for Linnea. We are thankful and grateful to say that all of the medical bills (insurance deductable) have been paid. Those of you who contributed to her medical bills have been a true blessing to us.

Next week we will be venturing out to Phoenix and then to Mexico to visit our ministry locations there. This will be a nice change of pace and scenery for Linnea who has been at home the past 4 months.

Below is a picture of Linnea at “the scene of the crime”. She fell at this spot last February.

Wow, So sorry Linnea. I just had time to log on today. I will pray for your recovery. I worked on an Orthopedic/Surgical ward for 3 years when I first began nursing..and that xray Tom sent definitely looks like they had to do a lot of repair. It also looks really good. From Tom’s post, he said you are a hard one to keep down so to speak (as evidenced by you being on the scaffolding in the first place)…It will not be hard to lay low at first..but once you feel “better” that is when it is crucial to take it easy and follow your Physical Therapist’s advice. (Just remember…you don’t want another surgery right…smile.) Anyway…I am sounding much too much like a nurse. I just wanted to let you both know we will pray for your patience, healing and LACK of pain. Sincerely, The Cruces

BEST WISHES FOR AN UNEVENTFUL RECOVERY, LINNEA.

(Never liked that word uneventful, but it is just what you want here)

Kind of hard to see anything positive here, but consider the problem a friend of mine had who was on a big game hunting trip in Tanzania, and had a heart event. He barely made it back home. You can just picture the level of care there.

I’m sure you are in good hands.

    Dear Linnea,

Wow! That is some incision! We continue to keep you in our prayers. We are at YWAM Maz right now doing the dts teaching as well as a leadership school (teaching on counseling difficult situations). Brent is leading this one and it has been really good. It has been quite cold here and so we are shivering most mornings and evenings! We’re glad to hear that the Ridgeway folks are taking good care of you and that you are so much better. Praying for patience as you lay low and fully recover. Love, Jan and Doug

    Tom,

I am praying for you guys and so grateful for the love and care coming from your community. I pray for supernatural intervention in ALL areas of your lives! Besides praying for Linnea’s total restoration, I am also praying that you will have divine wisdom to know your role as care giver. She needs you now more than ever before and I pray you will know what you need to do and where you need to be each moment of every day.

Praise God His word promises that He strengthens the feeble knee because the need is not only for healing but also for restored strength. HE IS ABLE!!!

My prayers are with you both,

    Pastor Connie Weisel

Oh Linnea, what an ordeal to go through!!! I am so sorry! We KNOW God is in this somewhere, and somehow, cuz the word says it to be true in Roms 8:28. So meanwhile we’ll continue to pray for peace, a speedy recovery, finances, patiences & God’s best in this circumstance! We love you guys and think of you often.

Loving you in Him, Steve & Denise

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement and responses. Tom has been great taking care of me. The town of Ridgway and our church in particular are amazing.

I am improving every day. I am so glad that they don’t cast these kinds of injury any more. I am able to shower and move my knee and ankle. Therepy twice a week is so helpful. It hurts and feels good at the same time.

The hardest thing has been the long, sleepless nights. Yesterday I was totally exhasted and discouraged from lack of sleep. Last night I slept so much better. Thank you, Lord!

We have had the coldest, snowiest winter in 20 years, so I am stuck inside most of the time.

i agree with the Horvaths-that pic of your leg with the staples is quite impressive, ahhh modern medicine.

Praying for you Linnea, I am confident that you will emerge from this totally healthy and mobile.

i saw doc Spiro today, he gave me a check-up before i head out to join the gang in Tepic, according to them everything is ok with this human machine of mine, so March 11th i am off to mexico. Linnea, will i see you there in Tepic someday?

You were already unstoppable, now you are bionic. We have been praying for your recovery. Surgeries and our family have been plentiful, but are not very fun. Next time you want time off, just read a book and forget the broken bones. Love you all.

    Linnea!

What a huge recovery process! I am so glad to see you back on your feet..sort of…ha! Hope all is well for you, Tom, and the family. Make sure to milk this thing for all its worth. Getting Tom to do the dishes must be something to behold. God’s blessings…
